The bridesmaid tradition was actually started way back in ancient days.  Bridesmaid’s original role was to dress in identical bridesmaid dresses and identical  to the bride’s wedding dress.  This was to protect the bride from the evil spirits or would be suitors by confusing them on who was actually the bride.

The tradition of having bridesmaids is still around today.  The only difference is that the bridesmaids dresses, even though they are still identical in most cases, are different from the bride’s wedding gown.

Going Casual

October 18, 2010

Going casual has grown in popularity in the last few years.  So has the definition of casual.  In the past, going casual meant something like jeans and tee or some other knock around comfy clothing.  You just never wore casual attire for many, what we refer to as, dressy events.  Women wore dresses and hats to church and men wore suits and ties.  Casual was only worn in weddings when the wedding was a private ceremony or such.

Today’s definition of casual is entirely different.  The casual wedding dress can be anything from a mini dress to a full length dress.  The unfrillyness of the dress and the type of fabric can determine how casual it is.  Many brides are choosing this casual look today for many reasons.  This is the type of dress you can continue to wear after the wedding.   The price of the dress is much lower than the normal wedding dress.  The bridesmaids dresses can be worn after the wedding event so as the bridesmaid will benefit by her investment.

A lot of today’s semi formal events are being labeled as semi casual.  Now, whatever that means, I do not know.  It seems to me like there is a lot gray matter in between the two.

Not only in the US, but in Europe as well, plus size clothing sales have taken a broad jump from the twentieth century.  Average weight of women in the US is between 145 and 150 pounds.  The average size of dress for women in the UK averages from size 14 to size 16.

“With the rise for the demand for the plus sizes, today’s market has risen to the need.  There are numerous markets for the plus sizes, whether it be for the plus size wedding dress or just nice casual clothes.  Within a few short years, the opportunity for purchasing plus size garments will be more plentiful than for buying regular size garments.

This does not mean that we should not be more health conscious about our weight,  we still need to watch how and what we eat and try to shed those extra pounds before they build up.

Theme Weddings

October 15, 2010

Theme weddings are getting more popular.  If you have ever seen the movie “27 Dresses, Katherine Heigl plays the part of a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and she had a bridesmaid dress for the theme of each wedding.  Themes can be fun and tend to express the true you.

A lot of weddings are centered around a theme of whatever season the wedding is in.  Springtime weddings can be themed with pastel colors and lots of spring flowers.  Summertime wedding ceremonies are great outdoors, unless it is in a rainy season or very hot.  There are endless theme possibilities for a summer wedding.  Of course Autumn weddings, being my favorite season, can be the most impressive of all season themes.  You have an array of deep colors to choose for your bridesmaid dresses as well as your own wedding dress.  And last, but certainly not least, that very popular winter wedding has an endless number of themes for that all important event….YOUR WEDDING.

You might want to choose the theme for your wedding and then choose your date accordingly.

The origin of the white wedding dress is thought to have started with Anne of Brittany for her wedding with Louis VII of France.  Up until then, women wore their Sunday Best for their wedding gown.  They often wore red or yellow.  During biblical times, a blue wedding dress was the most often chosen color.  This color was thought to symbolize purity.

During early Roman times, white symbolized joy and celebration.  In the last century, the white dress symbolized purity, and today it symbolizes happiness.

Thus we have the White Wedding Dress.

A Gal In Red

August 14, 2010

There is something sexy about a gal in red.  All ladies have a streak of adventure in them.  Choosing a sexy red wedding dress shows a sense of adventure and assertiveness for a bride on her wedding day.

Red wedding dresses have gained popularity for the braver sophisticated bride over the more conservative white wedding dress.

When choosing a red wedding dress, there are endless accessories to literally set off the glamor and appeal of the red.  If the red veil looks a little much, a good choice would be a soft cream or pearl color.  You can dress up with flashy jewelry or just a simple pendant.  As for shoes, since red comes in so many shades, I would advise dying the shoes to match the color of the dress.

As for the bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, and mother of bride dresses, several color options will work.  The same shade of red as the wedding dress or a different shade of red that will accent the red in the wedding dress.  Black is also a good alternative.  A black and red combination is very nice.

Whatever color you choose for the attendants, your sexy red wedding dress will light up the room and tell people you are in control of your life.

A Matron of Honor is just that.  It is such an honor to be asked to serve in that position.  Your  role is very important to the Bride for help in all the endless planning and decisions to be made throughout the whole wedding experience.  As a Matron of Honor, you have one of the most important roles in making sure the bride and groom’s wedding is a success.

A Matron of Honor will need to be willing to assist the bride in whatever she needs.  You may be asked to help with choosing her wedding dress as well as the bridesmaid’s dresses and the flower girl’s dress.  Keep in mind however, that the bride has the final choice.  Be willing to freely give your time and effort.  The chores could be endless.

A dedicated Matron of Honor is a “true friend indeed” to the bride.  She can always count on a true friend.

A Wedding In Rome

August 3, 2010

If you have ever been in Rome, you will undoubtedly have witnessed the many weddings performed there each day.  It seems like every other church you pass, there will be a wedding party with the bride in her beautiful white wedding dress and the groom in his debonair tuxedo and all of their handsome  attendants assembling outside the ancient old doors of some of the most splendid Baroque churches.

Getting married in Rome would be one of the most romantic experiences of your life.  In the Eternal City you can breathe the dreamy atmosphere  and take in all the beauty of the city.  Rome is the Romantic City.   A wedding in Rome,  A honeymoon in Venice.  What better place would there be for starting out your life together, as long as money is no object.

I cry at all weddings.  I have never been to a wedding that I did not think was beautiful.  A wedding is a union of two people who love each other and want to share their lives together.  How could this not be beautiful.  When the bride starts down the aisle in her carefully chosen wedding dress, looking a little apprehensive, a little scared, but very happy, I get these big goose bumps running up and down my spine.

This is truly a time for celebration.  This is a start of a new life, a new commitment for their selves and to each other.

Even if that big day is nine to twelve months away, you should start planning as soon as possible.  It will save a lot of griefs later on.

Start out by starting a file.  I like the accordion file because you can get a lot of records in them.  Get a journal, one with a section for names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses, because you will want to save all contacts information.  Write down everything.  Even the most minute detail that you may need later.

Get ideas by wedding books, internet, and any other sources that assist you in your selections.

Don’t get over excited if you change your mind often.  It’s expected.  The main thing, by starting early, you have given yourself time to change ideas.

Your wedding dress should be ordered as early as possible.  Whether it be custom made or just need alterations, this could take a while to get it perfected.  The same goes for your bridesmaid dresses.  You may still need a last fitting just before the wedding.

If you have everything scheduled and taken care, you can relax and enjoy your own wedding.
